The City Council today approved an ordinance that designates property on the Near West Side for the new 12th District Police Station.

The Public Building Commission (PBC) of Chicago, on behalf of the City of Chicago, will take steps to acquire the property located on West 14th Street between Throop Street and Blue Island Avenue. The PBC also will oversee construction of the new facility.

"This new station will serve as a community anchor and a safe haven for the neighborhood," said Mayor Richard M. Daley. "The station also will incorporate environmentally friendly features and advanced technology, giving the officers the tools they need to keep themselves and the public safe and secure."

The new 12th District Police Station will be the 14th new station since 1999 and will follow a prototype design with 44,000 square feet available in a two-story building. Features will include a secure detention and line-up facility, a fitness room, locker rooms for male and female officers, advanced communications equipment and a roll call room to conduct training and video conferencing. The station also will have a suite of offices dedicated to the district's community policing efforts as well as a community room for meetings.

The new station is projected to achieve "silver" certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Sustainable elements will include responsible storm water management, a green roof, the use of recycled materials in construction and the placement of light colored roofing and paving surfaces to reduce the heat island effect.
